Valle delle Ferriere

Mountain excursions Posted on Thu, October 29, 2015 17:33:37

Ferriere Valley is a unique place for hikers. Along the way there are
waterfalls and water streams that make the valley very cool even in summer. It
is easily reached on foot from Amalfi, with about an hour’s walk. The path runs
through the entire valley with two main tracks, one up from Amalfi, the other
down from Pontone. The most interesting part of the valley is undoubtedly the
Natural Riserva. Due to its geographical position, the area has some peculiar
physical and biological characteristics. Thanks to the rocky ridges that
protect it from the cold northern winds and exposed predominantly to the south,
the Riserva area benefits of a special ecological environment with high
humidity and moderate temperature changes.
The Valley was accurately studied in
loco by the German naturalist Karl Haekel, who discovered that because of the
particular conformation of the territory, and aided by small streams and damp
sea breezes a micro-climate of a subtropical type had formed. An exclusive
habitat for cyclamen, wild orchids, Pteris vittata, Pinguicola hirtiflora, a
small carnivorous plant, Erica terminalis, and a rare species of giant fern of
the tertiary period, the Woodwaria Radicans or Felce Bulbifera Gigante.

The Gods pathway

From Agerola to Nocelle through paradise.

The Sentiero degli Dei (the path of Gods) links the hill top town of Agerola, with Nocelle, a tiny fraction of Positano nested on the slopes of Monte Peruso.

Positano, Sentiero degli Dei

The name of the footpath, the Gods’ Pathway, is an indication of the spectacular scenery en route. Ideally, walkers should go up to Agerola by bus and walk from Agerola down to Nocelle, and not vice-versa, this way the route is a gentle downhill one, with magnificent views of the Amalfi Coast and the island of Capri.

The little villages on the Amalfi Coast mountains are very beautiful and reach in history. Visit this web page for an interesting walk from Scala to Amalfi, through Pontone e Torre dello Zirro.

Pontone di Amalfi

You take public transportation from Amalfi up to Scala and, after a brief visit to the village, return to Amalfi, through amazing scenery, down about a staircase of about 3000 steps. It’s a one day excursion. I suggest that you stop to eat in Pontone where you can find a good restaurant.
